Deaf Community Oaxaca México
During the summer of 2018, I had the opportunity to work with a young deaf community. The project was based in Oaxaca (Mexico). I worked with the drama group entitled “Guelagetza de palabras y señas”. Some participants were deaf and some were non-deaf.
Over several weeks, the group created a theatre piece through which each participant could examine their own life-path as a deaf person. The stories were full of issues around misunderstandings that were faced on a daily basis, including bullying behaviour from family members and peers. However, family and friends also showed support when any of the participants needed help. Compassion, solidarity and kindness are attributes that the participants wanted to extend into other communities.
